Comments: Because the crabapple is a stunning sight in bloom the demand for it in landscaping is great. There are more cultivars of crabapples than probably any other
ornamental landscape tree. The Manual of Woody Landscape Plants estimates 400-600 types (Dirr, pg. 524). Unfortunately, crabapples are very susceptible to disease and it is important to choose varieties that are disease resistant. Apple trees are prone to damage from deer browsing as are many trees and plants. Commercial apple orchards have tried to control this common pest with limited success.
