Who are the Watershed Associations - Part I?

Tunkhannock Creek Watershed (04/19.04) --- WATERSHED NEWS WHO ARE THE WATERSHED ASSOCIATIONS? – PART I(edited version) The Susquehanna River divides Wyoming County into a northeastern and a southwestern portion. The river’s course has produced two geologically significant meanders, Jayne Bend and the “Neck” (Vosburg). More remote as well as more recent geological events have shaped the current drainage patterns. The northeastern portion of the county is drained mainly by the Meshoppen Creek and Tunkhannock Creek watersheds, and the southwestern portion by the Mehoopany Creek and Bowman’s Creek watersheds. Area residents interested in the present and future welfare of their watersheds have formed groups dedicated to protecting them. The oldest of these groups, the Bowman’s Creek Watershed Association, Inc., was formed to identify the issues, concerns, and threats to this watershed and to develop a comprehensive watershed plan for it. The association meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 P.M. at the Noxen-Monroe Sportsmen’s Club. The mailing address is Bowman’s Creek Watershed Association, Inc., P.O. Box 236, Noxen, PA 18636; the contact person is Dorne White, (570) 639-1723. The Mehoopany Creek Watershed Association, Inc. was formed to preserve and improve the water quality in the Mehoopany Creek watershed. This association meets on the third Thursday of the month at 7:00 P.M. at the Mehoopany Township Municipal Building on School House Hill. The mailing address is Mehoopany Creek Watershed Association, Inc., P.O. Box 73, Mehoopany, PA 18629; the contact person is Lars Lundin, (570) 833-4561. The north and south branches of Mehoopany Creek and the entire Little Mehoopany Creek watershed are covered by this watershed association. Other local watershed associations, their goals, their meeting dates/locations, their addresses, and their contact persons will be discussed in Parts II and III. Robert C. Daniels
